Salah
Salah, officially Barıştepe, is a Tur Abdin village closely associated with the monastery of Mor Yaʿqub. Its religious importance extends beyond the size of the settlement.
Modern name: Barıştepe, Mardin Province
Also written: Ṣalaḥ · Salaḥ · Baristepe
History & community
The Syriaca gazetteer identifies Salah as a village and treats the nearby monastery of Mor Yaʿqub as a separate place. This is a useful distinction: a monastery can serve a region much larger than its neighbouring settlement. The monastery record identifies it as a seat of the Syriac Orthodox patriarchate of Tur Abdin from 1365.
The church of Mor Yakup is included in Türkiye's 2021 UNESCO tentative-list proposal for the area's churches and monasteries. The dossier describes late antique construction and later restoration. It is evidence of a layered building history and a proposed heritage grouping, rather than certification that the entire village is a World Heritage property.
Place-names and mistaken connections
A familiar name can create a misleading link. The Syriac writer Daniel of Salah has often been associated with this village in western scholarship. The specialist encyclopaedia explains that this identification was challenged by local monastic tradition and Patriarch Afram Barsoum, who connected Daniel instead with a place near Abu Kamal in Syria. His name alone therefore cannot establish that his career belonged to Barıştepe.
The strongest local anchors remain the village's documented identity and the separately identified monastery. The gazetteer supplies preferred coordinates with scholarly references and also preserves an alternate location from another map tradition. The point used here follows its preferred settlement location; it should not be treated as a surveyed boundary of the monastery or the village lands.
Language
Salah is documented in Syriac literary and ecclesiastical scholarship. The written Classical Syriac heritage of its monastery is distinct from any claim about the number or everyday languages of present residents.
