Iwardo
Iwardo, officially Gülgöze, is a Tur Abdin village remembered as a place of refuge during the Sayfo of 1915. Its historical name survives in Syriac scholarship and in accounts by regional writers.
Modern name: Gülgöze, Mardin Province
Also written: ʿAynwardo · Aynwardo · Aynward · Gulgoze
History & community
Syriaca identifies the village as ʿAynwardo and supplies several related spellings, including Aynward. The preferred coordinates used here come from that scholarly gazetteer. The English-language architectural heritage survey of Tur Abdin likewise links ʿAyn Wardo with the modern name Gülgöze, helping readers reconcile a historical source with a contemporary place-name.
A securely documented personal connection to 1915 is the family of Nuʿman Aydin, who was born in nearby Kfarze. His specialist biography records their refuge in Iwardo during the Sayfo massacres. This example establishes a particular family's movement; it is not used here to manufacture an exact total of defenders, refugees or casualties for the village.
A family account in Surayt and translation
Radboud University's Four Corners library catalogues Gabriel Grigo's 2022 book Sayfo in Iwardo. The account follows the village's defence through the remembered experience of Gello Grigo, transmitted by his son Isa and recorded by a later generation in the Netherlands. The catalogue distinguishes an original Surayt recording from the book's presentation in four other languages.
This chain of transmission matters. The book preserves family memory of 1915, while its recording and multilingual publication belong to a much later diaspora setting. The catalogue explicitly notes that publication by a church-supported press does not make the work an official church publication. Readers can therefore follow a local account while retaining its authorship, language and distance from the events it remembers.
Language
A recorded family account of Iwardo's 1915 defence is catalogued as Surayt, the region's vernacular Aramaic. This spoken record is distinct from its later English, Dutch, German and Turkish book presentation.
