Living language heritage

Distinguish Classical Syriac from diverse living Neo-Aramaic varieties.

Lesson 6 of 6 · about 10 minutes · reference compilation checked 5 October 2026.

Classical Syriac is an Aramaic variety associated with Edessa and a major literary tradition. Living Neo-Aramaic varieties have distinct histories, grammars and pronunciations. A literary reading course is not automatically a conversation course in a family’s spoken variety.

North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic includes diverse varieties historically spoken by Christian and Jewish communities across northern Iraq, north-west Iran and south-east Türkiye. Sureth is a common Christian speaker term. Language classification does not determine every speaker’s ethnic identity.
