Meaning, use and context

Papa bar ʿAggai is a documented name in accounts of the early Church of the East. Lucas Van Rompay identifies him as bishop of Seleucia-Ctesiphon and gives a range for his death. Papa here is a personal designation in a historical account, not automatically the later western office of pope.

The sources disagree about parts of his career and a conflict with other bishops. The claim that Papa or his successor attended Nicaea lacks corroboration, and some supportive letters have disputed authenticity. Attestation of the name does not make all later stories about the bearer equally reliable.

The catalogue's 'father' interpretation and comparison with pope require a separate linguistic history. This check establishes written historical use and explains its documentary limits. It does not determine modern naming suitability, present frequency, local pronunciation or the equivalence of every Papa-like form.
