Meaning, use and context
Emmanuel bar Shahhare provides an actual historical bearer, not merely a theological title or a word taken from scripture. Lucas Van Rompay identifies him as a monk near Mosul and author of a verse work on creation and salvation history, conventionally called a Hexaemeron.
The surviving manuscript collection has attribution difficulties. The first homily probably belongs to Narsai, the second is absent from the manuscripts, and Emmanuel's authorship is more secure from the third onward. A careful name profile should preserve this distinction instead of attributing the entire collection automatically to him.
The biography verifies personal use of Emmanuel in Syriac scholarship. It is not an independent lexical demonstration of 'God is with us', nor does it establish current frequency or a standard pronunciation across communities. These fields remain separate from the historical author's written attestation.
