Meaning, use and context
Elishaʿ bar Quzbaye is a named teacher and director in the early history of the School of Nisibis. Lucas Van Rompay distinguishes him from a simple reference to the biblical prophet and discusses sources that connect his education with the School of Edessa and Narsai.
The sources disagree about whether he directed the school immediately after Narsai or about twenty years later. They also leave part of his full name unexplained. His complete works are lost, though brief comments on Job survive in quotations attributed to Elishaʿ by Ishoʿdad of Merv.
The catalogue drops the final scholarly sign in Elishaʿ. The proposed 'God is salvation' meaning needs a separate linguistic source, and the teacher's uncertain chronology should not be smoothed into precise dates. Modern spelling, pronunciation recordings and naming frequency have not been certified by this written-attestation check.
