Meaning, use and context
Bardaiṣan is a named early Syriac author associated with the court of Abgar VIII at Edessa. Sebastian Brock explicitly explains that his name comes from the river Daiṣan, which flowed through the city. This is genuine name-formation evidence, not an English meaning attached to a name without a source.
His own writings are lost. The surviving Book of the Laws of the Countries presents him as a central speaker but was probably written by a pupil. Later hostile descriptions also shaped the reconstruction of his teaching, making the distinction between a historical person and every attributed statement important.
Bardaisan is the catalogue's simplified romanization of Bardaiṣan. The river connection does not independently establish a modern Syriac rendering or any single pronunciation of the name. Nor does the prominence of this early author amount to a present-day popularity survey or prove contemporary personal use of every variant.
