Meaning, use and context
Aba I provides a specific historical bearer, rather than only a word that could be used as a name. Lucas Van Rompay's account places him in the sixth-century Church of the East and follows his education at Nisibis, travels, teaching and eventual election as catholicos.
The biography points to a Syriac Life and surviving church documents. His leadership included reforms, but also imprisonment and exile under Persian authorities. An attribution of an entire Syriac Old Testament translation to Aba is expressly treated as unsubstantiated, so it is not repeated here as an achievement.
The catalogue's translation 'father' needs a separate lexical check. The Greek designation Patrikios used by Cosmas is discussed in the source, but that alone is not an etymology of every Aba, Awa or Abo form. Contemporary naming frequency and pronunciation remain unverified.
